Breaded tofu is a delicious, vegan-friendly plant-based option that is full of flavor and texture. It’s a great alternative to traditional breaded chicken or fish dishes, and it’s also super simple to make. The tofu is coated in a crunchy breadcrumb mixture and pan-fried until golden and crisp, then served with a variety of accompaniments such as rice, vegetables, or even a salad. It’s a great way to get your daily protein intake without relying on animal products.
- 1 block extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed
- 1 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup vegan parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 2 tablespoons vegan butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Start by draining and pressing the tofu. This is an important step that helps the tofu absorb the flavors of the breading mixture and get nice and crispy in the pan. To do this, wrap the tofu in several layers of paper towels and then place it on a plate. Place a heavy object on top of the tofu, such as a cast iron skillet or a heavy book. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
Once the tofu has been pressed, it’s time to make the breading mixture. In a shallow bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs, vegan parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Set the bowl aside.
Next, prepare the flour mixture. In a separate shallow bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour and unsweetened almond milk. Set this bowl aside as well.
Now it’s time to bread the tofu. Start by cutting the tofu block into 8 equal-sized slices. Dip each slice of tofu into the flour mixture, making sure it’s completely coated. Then dip it into the breadcrumb mixture, making sure it’s completely coated. Place the breaded tofu slices on a plate or baking sheet.
Heat the vegan butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the butter is melted and the oil is hot. Place the breaded tofu slices in the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes, flipping them once halfway through. The tofu should be golden and crispy on both sides. Remove from the heat and serve with your favorite accompaniments.
