Ingredients
- 1 block extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
Preparation
To begin, preheat your waffle iron to medium heat. Cut the tofu into 1/2-inch cubes and place them in a shallow bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle the spice blend over the tofu and mix well to coat. Add the olive oil and mix again to make sure all of the cubes are evenly coated.
Once your waffle iron is heated, brush it with a light coating of oil. Place the cubes of tofu onto the waffle iron and press down gently. Allow the tofu to cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping once halfway through. When the tofu is golden brown and crispy, remove it from the waffle iron and place it on a plate.
Brush the tofu cubes with barbecue sauce and return them to the waffle iron. Cook for a few minutes until the barbecue sauce has caramelized and the tofu is crispy and browned. Serve the tofu with your favorite sides and enjoy!
